The rule in one line: Etsy's AI policy still allows AI images and AI-made designs, but since October 22, 2026 most listings need at least one unedited photo of the real item, bot-generated listings are banned, and AI-written instructions such as patterns and recipes are banned. AI images can still fill the other photo slots and AI designs can still be sold, as long as the photos show what the buyer actually gets and any AI-made design is disclosed in the description.
Last updated October 26, 2026, based on Etsy's October 22, 2026 update.
For print-on-demand, the line that matters most is an exception. A shirt or mug printed by a production partner can use an authorized stock photo mockup in place of a real photo. That covers the one required image and leaves the rest of the listing open, which is why a 7-photo shirt listing gets audited slot by slot further down this page.
What changed in Etsy's AI policy on October 22, 2026
Etsy updated its Listing Image Requirements on October 22, 2026 and published new AI guidance in the Seller Handbook the same day. Etsy gave no separate start date; treat them as in force.
| Changed on Oct 22, 2026 | Stayed the same |
|---|---|
| One unedited real photo required for most items | AI-made designs can still be sold |
| Bot-generated listings banned | AI use in the item must be disclosed in the description |
| AI-written patterns, recipes and guides banned | AI prompt bundles stay banned |
| AI detection at upload, new report reason | POD sellers must still disclose their production partner |
Etsy's Creativity Standards page still shows "Last updated on Jun 10, 2025". The originality rules on that page did not change in this round.
The unedited photo rule, explained
The etsy unedited photo requirement means one photo in the listing must show the real item exactly as the camera captured it. Etsy's FAQ defines unedited as an image that "must not be edited or changed in any way", so no crop, no brightness fix and no background removal on that one photo.

"For most products, you must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background." "Do not use photo editing software or AI tools to alter this required photo."
Every other photo in the listing can be edited, including with AI, as long as the result still matches the product. The line Etsy draws is between edits that make a photo truer to the item and edits that change the item.
| Allowed on other photos | Not allowed on any photo |
|---|---|
| Adjust brightness, exposure, color balance to match reality | Change the item's color, material or condition |
| Crop, resize, straighten | Remove cracks, flaws or damage |
| Clean up or replace the background | Use AI to change the design or key features |
Phones apply their own processing (HDR, smoothing) before you ever touch the file, and Etsy has not said whether that counts as "edited". Until it does, shoot the required photo with as little automatic processing as your phone allows.
Are AI mockups allowed on Etsy? What POD sellers need to know
Partly. Etsy wrote an exception for print-on-demand, and its wording covers stock photos, not renders.
"If a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product (like a t-shirt or mug), you may use a stock photo mockup, if the stock photo's owner has authorized its use."
A POD listing does not need a photo you took yourself. It still needs one image that is either a stock photo mockup you are licensed to use for product listings or an unedited photo of a sample you ordered.
Etsy wrote "stock photo mockup", and many of the mockups POD sellers use every day are digital renders or AI images. Prodigi's guide for POD sellers reads the rules as allowing rendered mockups; that is its reading, not Etsy's text. If a listing leans only on rendered or AI mockups, add one stock photo mockup or real sample photo until Etsy clarifies.
Who prints for you matters too, because the exception only covers items a production partner makes on a standard base product. If you are still deciding on a printer, choosing a print provider covers what to compare.
Etsy fixes one required image but not its position. Its handbook separately asks sellers to "make your first listing photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item buyers will receive", so putting the required image first meets both.
| Image slot | What to use | AI allowed? |
|---|---|---|
| Photo 1 (the required image, first by Etsy's advice) | Authorized stock photo mockup or your own unedited sample photo | No |
| Photos 2 to 3 | Other colors and sizes, true to the product | Yes, if colors match the real blank |
| Photos 4 to 5 | Lifestyle scene with a new background | Yes, product unchanged |
| Photo 6 | Size chart | Not relevant |
| Photo 7 | Close-up of print or fabric from a real sample | Yes, if it stays accurate |
A changed background is allowed on every photo except the required one. Upload a product photo to Background Studio and describe the scene; the AI is told to leave the product alone and build the scene around it, but compare the result with your real item before listing it, because a shifted color would break Etsy's rule. For a size chart or color swatch, Remove Background gives you a 1K cutout of the product to build on. Free output is 1024 px from Background Studio and 1K from Remove Background, which clears the 635 px Etsy's image help page says a first photo should reach but sits below the 2000 px it recommends. Neither tool's output can serve as the required unedited photo.
Production partner disclosure and the "Designed by" attribution
Etsy's Creativity Standards sort every item into one of four categories, and a POD design printed by a partner, or made with AI from your own prompts, belongs to "Designed by a seller".
"Sellers' original designs that are produced or printed by a third party or offered as a digital download."
The same page sets both disclosures for that category, and neither changed on October 22. For partner-made items: "Sellers must disclose that an item is made by a production partner, and provide accurate information about where the item will ship from." For AI work: "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI."
| What to state | When it applies | Required? | Etsy source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production partner and ship-from location | A partner prints or makes the item | Yes | Creativity Standards |
| AI disclosure in the description | The design or item was made with AI | Yes | Creativity Standards |
| AI edits to listing photos | AI used only on photos | Recommended | Image help page, best practices |
An AI disclosure can be one plain sentence, written the way you would answer a buyer who asked.
- "I created this design with AI tools, working from my own concept and edits, and it is printed by my production partner."
- "The artwork on this mug was generated with AI from my own prompts, then refined by me."
- "Lifestyle photos were edited with AI to change the background. The product photo is unedited."
Etsy image rules by product type
The required photo depends on what you sell, and POD on a standard blank is only one case.

| Product type | Required image | AI images |
|---|---|---|
| POD on a standard blank (shirt, mug) | Authorized stock photo mockup or a real photo | Extra photos, if accurate |
| Digital download with visual content (printables, templates) | Preview or excerpt of the actual file | Extra photos, if accurate |
| Digital download with no visual content (audio) | Illustrative image | Allowed, if not misleading |
| Custom or made-to-order | Real photos of items you made before | Extra photos, if accurate |
| Patterns, recipes, seeds | One unedited photo of a finished result | Cannot be the only images of the result |
For patterns and recipes Etsy is blunt: "AI-generated images cannot be the only images used to show the finished result."
Can you still sell AI art on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy allows AI art when the seller plays a clear creative role, and its own examples include a fantasy scene made from the seller's prompt and an AI pet portrait.
Do not describe an AI design as handmade. Etsy's October guidance says sellers "cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation", and its page on Etsy's stance on AI creations counts using AI to "misrepresent an item for sale" as fraud. A concept you make with Create Design on Podezzy (one line of idea in, a 1K concept out on the free tier) is an AI design, so it gets the disclosure line when you list it.
What Etsy bans outright, from bot listings to prompt bundles
Disclosure does not rescue three kinds of AI listing. Bot-generated listings are the newest ban, and Etsy's wording puts a person behind every listing.

"Every item listed on Etsy must involve direct, individual human prompting, curation, and creative input into that specific item. Mass-automated generation of listings or products through scripts or other automated processes without individualized human oversight is prohibited."
Instructions written by AI are out as well, covering knitting, crochet, sewing and quilting patterns, recipes, woodworking plans, assembly manuals and how-to e-books. Etsy's reason is that wrong AI instructions only show up after the buyer has spent time and materials.
AI prompt bundles sold as a product were banned before this update and still are. Selling a design you made from your own prompts is a different thing, and it stays allowed with disclosure.
Etsy has not said whether bulk listing tools that publish through its API count as "automated generation". If you use one, review each listing by hand before it goes live, since that is the "individualized human oversight" the policy asks for.
How Etsy will enforce the new AI rules
- When you add an image Etsy detects as AI, the listing form now shows guidance, and Etsy plans to enforce more proactively as listings are created.
- The "Report this item to Etsy" flag gets a new reason for listings "that may use misleading AI imagery", though Etsy says these reports "won't result in immediate enforcement action" at first.
- Etsy says it will "continue to expand removals of violative listings in the coming months", with no date attached.
- If a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from the listing, the seller "may be responsible for refunding the buyer".
- A removed listing can be appealed from the Policy violations page in Shop Manager.
Etsy AI policy myths vs facts
| Claim | What Etsy actually wrote |
|---|---|
| "Etsy bans AI images" | AI images are fine as extra photos; AI designs can be sold |
| "You must disclose every AI-edited photo" | Recommended for photo edits; required when the item is AI-made |
| "POD sellers must photograph every product" | Authorized stock photo mockups are allowed for POD |
| "Rendered or AI mockups are definitely allowed" | Not mentioned; only "stock photo mockup" |
| "'Your Text Here' images are now fine as the main photo" | Still barred as the first photo for personalized items |
The last row trips people up because the "Your Text Here" wording was removed from the Listing Image Requirements. It is still in the Creativity Standards, which did not change.
A 7-photo POD shirt listing, audited slot by slot
Take a listing for a retro sunset shirt whose design was made with AI, printed by a production partner, with seven photos built the way plenty of POD listings were built before October 22.

| Slot | What it is now | Passes? | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Partner's 3D render on a white background | Unclear | Swap in a licensed stock photo mockup or an unedited sample photo |
| 2 | Same render in five other shirt colors | Yes | Check each color matches the real blank |
| 3 | AI beach scene, shirt left untouched | Yes | None |
| 4 | AI street scene where the tool also brightened the print | No | Regenerate with the print colors unchanged |
| 5 | Size chart | Yes | None |
| 6 | Close-up of the print from your own sample, color-balanced | Yes | None |
| 7 | Realistic AI model wearing the shirt, print unchanged | Yes, if print and color match the real shirt | Etsy notes SB 1050 may require a label from January 1, 2027 |
Five slots pass, one fails and one is a judgment call. Slot 4 fails because changing the item's color is barred on every photo, and a brighter print is a changed color even when it looks better. Slot 1 is the one Etsy's text does not settle, and since slot 6 is color-balanced, nothing else in the listing is clearly an unedited photo or a stock photo mockup. Swapping slot 1 for a licensed stock mockup or a sample photo fixes both problems at once. Because the design is AI-made, the description also needs a disclosure line, and the production partner has to be named.
Checklist: update your POD listings this week
- At least one photo is an unedited photo of the real item or an authorized stock photo mockup, ideally the first.
- No photo changes the item's color, material, condition or design.
- If the design was made with AI, the description says so.
- The production partner is disclosed on the listing.
- "Handmade" does not appear in the title, tags or description of an AI design.
What Etsy still hasn't clarified
- How much human involvement is enough for a listing not to count as bot-generated.
- Whether a phone's automatic processing counts as editing the required photo.
- Whether AI-generated mockups fall under the POD stock photo mockup exception.
Etsy calls these changes "our starting point, not the finish line". This page will be updated when it publishes them, with the change noted in the log below.
Etsy AI policy FAQ
Does Etsy have a no-AI policy?
No. Etsy allows AI-made items and AI-edited photos. Its rules ask for one unedited real photo on most listings, disclosure when the item is made with AI, and a person behind every listing.
Do Etsy sellers have to disclose AI?
Yes, when the item itself was made with AI, the listing description must say so. Disclosing AI edits to listing photos is recommended by Etsy but not required.
Can I use AI-generated models in my listing photos?
Etsy allows AI in extra photos if the product is shown accurately. Etsy's FAQ also notes that, for US buyers, California's SB 1050 may require labeling images with AI-generated people who look real, starting January 1, 2027. Check with a lawyer for how that applies to your shop.
Can I use Printify mockups on Etsy?
Yes, as long as they show the product accurately. Whether a given Printify mockup can also serve as the one required image depends on whether it is a stock photo or a render, which Etsy's exception does not settle, so a sample photo is the safe choice for that image.
Can I use Canva mockups on Etsy?
Start with what Canva's license allows for that file, because Etsy's exception asks that the stock photo's owner has authorized its use.
Update log
October 26, 2026: published, based on Etsy's October 22, 2026 changes to the Listing Image Requirements and its AI guidance.
What to do next
When the audit leaves your lifestyle slots needing new scenes, Background Studio puts your real product photo into a scene you describe. Check the product still matches your real item, and keep the required photo untouched.
